Sludge Management

Biological treatment and settlement systems will result in sludge generation. The strategies for managing the sludge will generally depend on the type and quantity of sludge. For industrial applications mechanical sludge dewatering and thickening systems will potentially result in quick returns on investment. Biological sludge from municipal works may be suitable for passive systems such as sludge reed bed dewatering systems. NWS can advise on both passive and mechanical systems.

Sludge Thickening

NWS engineers have designed and installed sludge thickening systems capable of thickening sludge from 0.1% dry solids to 10% dry solids.

Careful selection of sludge thickening equipment can often lead to returns on investment of less than 6 months. NWS will undertake an initial investigation on the sludge to fully understand its characteristics and then recommend systems tailored to individual processes.

Sludge de-watering

NWS can advise on sludge de-watering requirements generally up to 25% dry solids. However, NWS engineers have installed systems capable of 40% - 65% dry solids using Electro Osmosis Dehydrator technology.

For biological sludge NWS can also design and construct systems capable of high levels of pathogen kill. Total systems which meet the requirements of the safe sludge matrix are readily achievable.
